Participation in the Veterinary Association (TVC) will provide independent animal hospitals a new way to increase profits, provide new offerings to their customers and compete against online and brick and mortar retailers.
is harder every day to turn a profit for independent veterinary practices. Today’s economy is limiting visits by customers, many strapped consumers watch every dollar you spend. The bottom line is also feeling the pressure from competitors such as Internet sales, big box pet stores and pharmacies, says Richard A. Morris, Managing Director of the Veterinary Cooperative Development.
As owner of the veterinary practice, how to make more profit from a company in this type of pay? To compete, the first step is to recognize that the world is changing and your practice must change with it says Morris, who has seen these same pressures in many other industries. Veterinary practices should negotiate with suppliers as efficiently as the large companies which are no longer competitive. This is almost impossible to do when trying to buy independent only. No matter how good they are negotiating skills, you just can not get the same pricing and disadvantaged from the start.
Don Holst, DVM, a charter member and Veterinary Advisory Officer of OMX, says, I must be able to buy pet food, medicines and medical supplies at a price that allows me to compete and make a profit. If the independent animal owners hospitals joined in purchasing power, we could get that pricing!
Adam Schwartz, vice president of public affairs and member services of the National Cooperative Business Association says this concept has worked in many other industries. True Value Hardware is an example where individual owners have joined a partnership that gives them the buying power of big-box competitors like Home Depot.
Morris adds, Independent veterinary industry in the U.S. needs a national cooperation for this purpose. The Veterinary Association will ensure a level playing field in almost every area of practice of an animal hospital to do all our members to remain competitive and independent. Morris notes that cooperatives do more than just offer lower prices. Well-run cooperatives also help members to share ideas and best practices that lead to new ideas and innovative sales and profits for members.
